Nursery brings more green to Irvine scene
Many, if not most of the nurseries, are tucked away in less visible locations. But not the new, park-like oasis that is the Moon Valley Nursery in Irvine’s Oak Creek Village, which recently opened at Alton Ave. and the 405.
For commuters speeding by on the freeway, the 30-acre new nursery offers a nice glimpse of greenery for the few seconds it takes to travel between the Sand Canyon and Jeffrey exits. For cyclists and walkers who frequent the bike path, what once was a vacant tumbleweed-filled stretch is now filled with tall trees swaying in the wind. And for those looking to do some landscaping, especially with drought-tolerant trees, there are thousands of specimen-sized ones to choose from.
Palms, cypress, olive trees and pepper trees are just a few of the varieties available, along with shrubs, vines and other plants. The workers don’t seem to mind browsers in the park-like setting.
The Moon Valley Nursery company is based in Phoenix, and touts its “desert-toughened” product as being perfect for our SoCal drought conditions (hey El Nino, where’d you go?). The nursery offers a “you buy it, we’ll plant it” service, which is nice for those planning to add large, specimen trees to their property. And speaking of planning, the nursery offers landscape design services, too.
