Smile, You’re in Irvine!
Still, it’s good for the creative soul to see art actually up on museum and gallery walls. Which is why we can enthusiastically encourage all to view “Smile: Expressions of Orange County,” a photography exhibit at the Orange County Great Park Gallery.
The exhibit features the work of more than 40 photographers and contains at least one shot from every city and unincorporated area in OC, from La Habra to San Clemente.
Particularly striking are the photos by Orange County native Nathan Vernes. Shot on film, they feature vintage cars in the streets and driveways of our county.
There’s a wall mosaic featuring 40 pictures from the Photographic Society of Orange County. Those 40 images, taken from the society’s book “A Slice of Orange,” first inspired the Great Park Gallery staff and curator Kevin Staniec to organize the exhibit.
Staniec, named one of OC’s most influential people last year by the OC Register, also programs arts and culture for the city of Irvine and the Irvine Fine Arts Center.
“Smile” is an approachable art experience for the whole family. The content is easily absorbed and appreciated by even the youngest art fans, as many of the photographs feature such familiar locations as Disneyland, Angel Stadium, beaches, piers, and a whole series on In-N-Out burger locations by photographer Patrick Fraser. With the gallery’s proximity to the Great Park balloon, carousel, and playground, it makes for a fun outing. Plus, the exhibit is free!
