Bokota, Brooks and Carroll for
IUSD Board of Education
By Irvine City News Staff
The two most important elements to maintaining the quality of life in Irvine are the continuing excellence of our public schools, and maintaining the city’s stellar record of public safety.
As voters we can impact safety by our votes for mayor and city council. When it comes to public education, we have a direct say via our vote to elect members of the Irvine Unified School District Board of Education
Three of the five seats on the IUSD Board of Education are up for at-large general election on November 8.
Incumbents Paul Bokota and Lauren Brooks are running for re-election, along with four other candidates: Betty Carroll, Naz Hamid, Mark Newgent, and Geri Zollinger.
ICN enthusiastically endorses incumbents Bokota and Brooks. They’ve proven to be intelligent and forceful advocates for Irvine’s students and families while serving on the Board of Education. They deserve to be returned to their seats.
Bokota makes the case for his candidacy clearly and concisely: “I am very proud of the work the school board and the district have done to continue providing excellent schools and serving Irvine kids. I remain committed to the idea that our schools are central to the community and am seeking re-election because I am passionate about continuing the work and helping our schools serve the needs of each and every student.”
Brooks’ dedication to Irvine’s public schools is also evident: “I have lived in Irvine for the last 30 years and I am a proud mother of 2 IUSD graduates. Over this time I have served our community in many ways including: School Site Council member, PTA president, educator, Irvine Public School Foundation Board member, as well as a member of the Irvine Children’s Fund Board of Directors. I have been fortunate to have benefited from IUSD’s programs and our dedicated teachers and to be able to give back to the IUSD community.”
ICN also endorses Betty Carroll for the third seat in the school board election.
Carroll has served in local school leadership roles on the school site council and as PTA first vice president. She serves as the chair of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation and sits on the IUSD Education Advisory Committee as the appointee of school board member Michael Parham, a 12-year veteran School Board member, who is not running for re-election this year. Parham endorses Carroll to take his seat on the school board.
“Betty is the perfect choice to fill my seat on the School Board this November,” says Parham. “I fully endorse her and ask my supporters, fellow school board members, and neighbors to join with me. With her city-wide experience on the IPSF Board and the IUSD Education Advisory Committee, and her extensive involvement at her neighborhood school, she is truly the perfect candidate to succeed me on the School Board.”
