SPORTS PARK PARTY!
The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. and will include plenty of opportunities to experience the new sports fields and courts built by FivePoint for citizens of Irvine and greater Orange County. Those attending the event should enter the Orange County Great Park on Great Park Boulevard for best parking opportunities and easiest access to the day’s events.
The Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Galaxy will have fun fan zones set up in the Sports Park where kids can test their hockey and soccer skills. There will be giveaways and team gear, too. Just look for the giant team-themed inflatables.
There will be racquets, courtesy of Babolat, available at the tennis venue, which includes 25 hard-surface tennis courts, so visitors can test their skills on the new courts, as well as special clinics and demonstrations. Plus, some of the top junior players in the area will compete in a World Team Tennis-style demonstration tournament.
The five new sand volleyball courts will host former UCLA All-Americans and beach volleyball stars Matt Taylor and Ed Ratledge, who will run clinics and demonstrations. There will also be special appearances by UCI men and women players who will work with youth players and put on an exhibition.
There will also be interactive and family-friendly educational opportunities at the event. Wyland Education Center will have its Mobile Learning Center at the Sports Park. The state-of-the-art, 1,000-sq.-ft. exhibition on wheels features a 40-person multisensory theater and six interactive stations. The exhibit offers a museum-quality science experience that allows students to explore how the quality and availability of water affects the quality of our lives.
And set throughout the Sports Park will be Great Park/El Toro Story Stations, where visitors can learn the history of the land, from Native Americans to the Marine Corps base to the Great Park.
There will be more than a dozen food and dessert trucks on hand, as well as lemonade stands and plenty of water available so everyone can stay hydrated.
At 3:30 p.m. the Opening Ceremony for the new FivePoint/City of Irvine Soccer Stadium will begin. The Olympic-like ceremony will feature music, a color guard, the national anthem and a ceremonial first “strike” or kick. There will be words of welcome from Irvine Mayor Don Wagner and FivePoint Chairman and CEO Emile Haddad, followed by the inaugural Orange County All-Star Soccer Shootout, featuring a collection of some of the best 17- and 18-year-old boys soccer players from throughout Orange County. At halftime, a special “little kids” game will entertain the crowd.
The teen soccer players will be introduced and paraded onto the field for the 60-minute match.
The match will include distinguished coaches as well, including former U.S. National Team stars Landon Donovan, Amy Rodriguez and Brad Friedel.
Rodriguez is a professional soccer player who grew up in Lake Forest and was a star player at Santa Margarita High School and USC. She won a gold medal on the U.S. Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics. She was also on the 2012 FIFA World Cup winning U.S. Team.
Friedel was played professional soccer in the Premier League and played 82 games for the U.S. National Team between 1992 and 2005. He represented his country at three FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Landon Donovan, one of the best U.S. soccer players ever, has been the all-time leading goal scorer for the LA Galaxy, MLS and the U.S. National Team.
Then, as the sun goes down in Irvine, The Blues Brothers will take the stage in the soccer stadium, so young and old alike can dance in celebration of a new era for Irvine and the Orange County Great Park.
FivePoint is underwriting the grand opening event for the first phase of the Sports Park, in collaboration with the city of Irvine. When complete, it will be 175 acres and one of the largest multisport facilities in the United States.
This iconic sports park will be owned and operated by the City of Irvine. As part of FivePoint’s commitment, the sports park is being paid for and build entirely by FivePoint, for the City of Irvine. FivePoint’s committed to developing 688 acres of the Great Park, including the Sports Park. The company expects to spend in excess of $250 million in the process. This includes $30 million to remove runways and complete infrastructure in the park.
