You want Wagner for mayor
By Jacob Levy, editor and publisher
Irvine City News has been in production for five issues now and from the feedback we continue to receive, our readers are very happy to have a real source of news for Irvine. As previously mentioned here, the OC Register hasn’t focused on Irvine to the depth that many crave and the Irvine Community News & Views has morphed from pretending to be a newspaper to becoming an all-out campaign piece for Mary Ann Gaido again.
Irvine City News has sent out candidate surveys, reviewed their responses, and conducted an online poll and we base our endorsement for mayor on all of these. As you can read in this month’s feature story, we endorse Don Wagner for mayor for the following reasons:
Gold for US Water Polo
The United States Olympic Water Polo team currently trains in Los Alamitos, but has been meeting with city of Irvine staff, councilmembers, and stakeholders to try to establish a permanent training facility at the Orange County Great Park, adjacent to the world-class Sport Park now under construction.
In Rio, the United States women won the gold medal, beating Italy in the finals and dominating the Olympic games all the way through.
With 10 of the 17 players hailing from Southern California, it is no doubt that an Irvine training facility would be well placed. Much like the Woollett Aquatic Center serves as a swimming hub for school, club, and community teams, an Olympic training pool at the Great Park would be an amazing amenity for the residents of Irvine. The city council should take advantage of this golden opportunity.

Irvine Update
With the final season of Irvine Meadows almost halfway over, the news still receiving the most views and comments on our Facebook page is about the possibility of a new location at the Great Park for the beloved amphitheater.
We understand that efforts at the actual concerts have turned up over 10,000 supporters so far with many more left to sign up. The Save Live Music in Irvine Team has also placed a memory wall up inside the amphitheater venue and people are signing and leaving stories and memories at each concert.
Some of these memories, plus videos of the final concerts, can be found at the Facebook and YouTube pages for Save Live Music in Irvine.
We reiterate again that the Irvine City Council should end the speculation and give the people what they want: a guarantee that live music in Irvine isn’t going anywhere. The council should approve a ground lease with LiveNation before this season ends.

- His track record at the Community College District Board and serving Irvine in the California Assembly: He is a proven leader who has shown that he cares deeply about education and solid governance.
- The other candidates for mayor are largely unproven and need to establish their credentials in governance before stepping up to run a city as dynamic and complex as Irvine.
- Mary Ann Gaido is running on a platform of hypocrisy. As Larry Agran and Beth Krom’s team member and planning commissioner for decades, Gaido approved the development she is now criticizing. This contempt for the intelligence of the voters is unfortunately not new for the Agran team. They believe they can scare people into ignoring the facts.
