Swim is in at Speedo meet
Swimming is part of living in Irvine. Whether it’s early childhood lessons for safety, recreational swimming for fun and fitness, or competitive swimming for all ages, locals love living a life aquatic.
Attending the Speedo Grand Challenge swim meet at the Woollett Aquatics Center is a great opportunity for those who want to see and support young swimmers who may become the next Jason Lezak, Amanda Beard, Aaron Piersol, some of the bigger names among the Irvine’s Olympic athletes and coaches.
The Speedo Grand Challenge is hosted by Irvine Novaquatics May 27-29. The meet will likely draw Olympic hopefuls; since it’s an Olympic year, particularly West Coast swimmers will likely attend in preparation for Olympic trials. Confirmation of swimmers attending will be available 10 days prior to the meet. For swim fans, the age group swimmers, including some of the fastest 7-12 year olds in California are fun to watch. Spectators can also cheer on high school swimmers who will have competed at their high school championships the week prior.
One well-known swimmer currently scheduled to compete in the meet is Jessica Hardy. She has broken 12 world records and won 28 medals in major international competition to date, 14 of them gold. She won a gold medal in the 4x100 Medley Relay and bronze in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay at the 2012 London Games. Hardy is an official ambassador to the USA Swimming Foundation, and has traveled the country as part of the Make a Splash Tour raising awareness of drowning, the second leading cause of accidental death for those 1-14 years of age.
Tickets and session passes will be available at Woollett Aquatics Center.
