Orange County SC Wins Big in Vegas

Victory over Las Vegas Lights FC continues record-breaking season and clinches first round home playoff game.
Picture
In a wild Wednesday match, Orange County SC defeated Las Vegas Lights FC 5-3 thereby adding to its franchise best records for wins and points in a season and clinching the first pro soccer home playoff game in Orange County history.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to quiet the crowd at Cashman Field. In the 8th minute, Orange County SC midfielder Aodhan Quinn tapped home a rebound off of a save from goalkeeper Ricardo Ferrino. Orange County would double its lead in the 31st minute when forward Thomas Enevoldsen found himself behind the Lights’ defense and buried the chance.

An unfortunate deflection helped spring Las Vegas midfielder Juan Carlos Garcia, who was able to beat Orange County SC goalkeeper Andre Rawls in the 36th minute. The Lights would equalize in first half stoppage time after a chaotic scene in front of goal ended with a Miguel Garduno score.

Las Vegas took the lead early in the second frame. Forward Sammy Ochoa put home a header in the 48th minute. But substitute forward Michael Seaton was able to equalize on a shot from outside the area for Orange County. Both clubs pressed for the important next goal, and it was Seaton that did the job again for Orange County SC as he tapped the ball past Ferrino for his second goal of the night on an assist from Aodhan Quinn—who also assisted on Seaton’s first tally. Late in stoppage time, Enevoldsen would add his second goal of the contest and the fifth and final goal for Orange County in “Sin City”.

With the win, Orange County clinched a top four seed in the USL Western Conference playoffs which translates to a first round home playoff match at Championship Soccer Stadium. The victory also extended the club’s lead atop the table to four points over second place Phoenix Rising FC.

Orange County will return home for its 2018 regular season home finale on Saturday, October 6th. Tickets are available at https://www.orangecountysoccer.com/tickets.

Stat Highlights
·      Thomas Enevoldsen’s brace gives him 19 goals on the season, which is good for sole possession of second place in the USL’s Golden Boot race.
·      Aodhan Quinn scored his 10th goal of the season and added two assists, giving him a USL-second best 13 on the campaign. He also became the third player ever to reach double digits in goals and assists.
·      Michael Seaton now has 12 goals after scoring twice against Las Vegas. He is tied for 14th in the league.

ORANGE COUNTY SOCCER CLUB SECURES A PLAYOFF BERTH AND A BIG HOME WIN

Club pads USL Western Conference lead and adds to franchise record books with convincing 5-2 victory over Real Monarchs SLC.

Orange County SC celebrates a big win in-front of the home crowd tonight
It was a night worthy of celebration for Orange County SC and its supporters. The club on Sept. 19 officially clinched a playoff spot, and then made a statement by defeating Real Monarchs SLC 5-2 in front of the home crowd at Championship Soccer Stadium.

The victory further secured Orange County’s first place position in the USL Western Conference, and added to the club’s record breaking season totals in wins and points. Following Swope Park’s 2-0 victory over San Antonio FC in Kansas City, shortly after kickoff in Irvine, Orange County secured a berth in the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs.

“It’s a great feeling to be back in the playoffs, and I am convinced that we have a team that can compete for a USL championship,” said Orange County SC General Manager & EVP Oliver Wyss. “The credit goes to the hard work of our entire technical staff and talented players, who have worked tirelessly all season long to clinch a spot in the post-season—where this club belongs.”

In his first season as Orange County SC Head Coach, Braeden Cloutier has helped guide a talented team to the post-season. “Clinching the playoffs is a great feeling, and a tribute to the hard work this team has put into this season,” said Cloutier. “It’s only the first step though, in accomplishing our overall goal for the season. We still have a lot of work to do in the next several weeks, and I know our players are not satisfied.”

Against Real Monarchs, Orange County played as if it was not satisfied. After conceding an early goal, midfielder Aodhan Quinn tapped home a goal and midfielder/defender Noah Powder chipped the goalkeeper from nearly mid-pitch—a surefire USL Goal of the Week candidate.

Following an SLC equalizer, Orange County ran off three unanswered goals: One from midfielder Christian Duke—his first of the 2018 USL regular season—followed by a penalty from Aodhan Quinn and then the final score from forward Thomas Enevoldsen.

Orange County SC returns to action a week from today, traveling to “Sin City” to take on Las Vegas Lights FC. Kickoff is set for 8pm at Cashman Field. Orange County’s final 2018 regular season home game is on Saturday, October 6th, and tickets are available at https://www.orangecountysoccer.com/tickets. Playoff ticket information will be announced within the next week.

Stat Highlights
·      Noah Powder has scored a goal in three straight matches. He added an assist on Quinn’s opener.
·      Thomas Enevoldsen moves into a tie for 2nd in the USL’s Golden Boot race with 17 goals, tied with North Carolina’s Daniel Rios.
·      Defender Joe Amico connected on 80% of his 40 passes, and had three tackles.
·      Christian Duke scored his first goal on the 2018 season.

Sports enthusiasts celebrate opening of final phase of Great Park Sports Park
By Irvine City News staff
It was perfect late-summer baseball weather in Irvine as more than 1,000 residents, sports families, elected officials and community leaders came together Sunday, Sept. 16, to dedicate the new Championship Baseball Stadium in the Orange County Great Park Sports Park.

The completion of the 194-acre Sports Park is a major step in the public-private effort to develop the entire 688-acre Great Park into a metropolitan park rivaling the best in the nation.

There was more action than a double header as a full day of fun unfolded with ceremonies, exhibition baseball and softball games, food trucks and information booths. In addition to the baseball action, games and practices were underway in other areas of the Sports Park including soccer, beach volleyball, tennis and basketball.

The celebration included an Opening Ceremony at the new Championship Baseball Stadium, that included remarks from city of Irvine Mayor Don Wagner, FivePoint Chairman and CEO Emile Haddad, Community Services Commissioner Dick Owens, Premier Girls Fastpitch CEO and softball ambassador Dan Hay and Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer.

Two special guests, both O.C. natives, also were part of the dedication ceremony. Representing the softball community was Amanda Freed, an Olympic gold medal winner, NCAA national champion, and 2018 inductee into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.

Shawn Green, former Tustin high school standout and two-time MLB All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers, represented the baseball community.

More than 500 athletes from two dozen schools paused in between exhibition games to be introduced on the field at the start of the Opening Ceremony.

The event concluded with a ceremonial first pitch between local youth softball and baseball catchers and Wagner, Haddad, Irvine council members Christina Shea and Melissa Fox, Owens, Hay, Spitzer, Freed and Green.

Funded by FivePoint's joint venture, the Sports Park is twice the size of Disneyland.  FivePoint committed to build the facilities in five years. It was completed ahead of schedule in just four years.

The sports complex fills a need for additional sports and recreation facilities in the region, and adds a new chapter to the legacy of the land that was the home of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.

The latest phase of stadiums and fields that were just completed include seven baseball fields, including a 1000-seat Championship Baseball Stadium; five softball fields, including a Championship Softball Stadium with seating for 500; six synthetic-turf soccer fields; four basketball courts; flex fields for lacrosse, rugby, cricket, and other uses.

The first phase of the Sports Park, which opened last year, included a 5000-seat Championship Soccer Stadium; six natural-turf soccer fields; 25 tennis courts, including a Championship Tennis Court with seating for 100; five sand volleyball courts, including a Championship Volleyball Court with seating for 100; and one-acre children’s playground.

OC Soccer Club will return to Irvine on
Sept. 8 at the Champion Soccer Stadium at the Great Park Sports Park

Orange County SC settles for 1-1 draw vs. Seattle Sounders FC 2, continuing USL West Conference Climb.

The OC Soccer Club is the USL affiliate of the LAFC and the only professional soccer team in Orange County. The club took a big step towards clinching their first playoff berth in franchise history with a draw in Seattle.

Playing in the Pacific Northwest for the second time in two weeks, Orange County Soccer Club settled for a 1-1 draw against Seattle Sounders FC 2.

Midfielder Aodhan Quinn nearly opened the scoring in the 8th minute for Orange County, but his great individual run ended with a shot going narrowly wide. On a free kick a minute later, Orange County would miss a close-range effort over the bar.

Orange County Soccer Club fell behind in the 12th minute at Cheney Field. Goalkeeper Andre Rawls made a big save to deny S2 midfielder Azriel Gonzalez. Unfortunately, midfielder Jesse Daley would recover the rebound and beat Rawls with a powerful strike from outside the box.

In the 57th minute, Orange County would level things by way of a set piece. From a corner kick, Quinn found a leaping Alex Crognale and the defender blasted home the header. The remainder of the match saw quality chances for both clubs, but none that altered the scoreline. Sounders FC 2 saw a goal disallowed due to offside, and Quinn had a last-minute shot from right in front of goal saved by S2 goalkeeper Bryan Meredith.

The visitors held a big edge in shots (14-5) and in possession (64 percent). Orange County now sits alone in second place in the USL’s Western Conference, now one point ahead of Phoenix Rising FC.

Orange County will return to Irvine on Saturday, September 8th to host OKC Energy FC at Championship Soccer Stadium. Tickets are available at orangecountysoccer.com/tickets, or by calling 949-647-GOAL.

Stat Highlights

  • Aodhan Quinn recorded his 10th assist of the season, placing him in a tie for second in the USL.
  • In his return to Seattle, winger Darwin Jones finished with one shot, two fouls won and one key pass.
  • Forward Thomas Enevoldsen completed 85 percent of his passes.
